Are You Just Tolerating Your Job???

Are You Just Tolerating Your Job???

The act of tolerating is simply like having a dull headache.  You learn to live with it, ignore its annoyance, and get your work done anyway.  For many this is how we experience our careers on a daily basis.  For these people the answer of whether they like their job has been reduced to, “Well.  It pays the bills.”

Sarah is a senior associate at a well known advertising agency.  She is well educated and is known for her reliability and strong knowledge of the business.

Despite working 70+ hour weeks at her job, she still struggles to meet her work deadlines.  In addition she is continually stressed, her health is deteriorating, and she has a growing dislike for her job.  Although Sarah has continued to tolerate her stressful working environment, she has been at her company for 5 years.

For a lot people they have been tolerating their career for so long that they have forgotten that things can be any other way.  For Sarah this was the case.  During her first year at her company she tolerated her job because it paid her well and gave her time to find a new job opportunity in the tourism industry. After a year of unsuccessful finding a new job opportunity and she got discouraged and started to get comfortable working at her current job.

After working with Sarah we were not only able to raise her awareness to her career toleration but also decide that it was no longer acceptable.  Through our work together Sarah was able to change careers and transition to job that she loves in the tourism industry.

What are you tolerating about your career?
